Some places seem resonant in a way that is difficult to rationalise. My paintings are usually inspired by real objects and locations that serve as a jumping-off point to explore whatever concerns seem pertinent at the time. I work up a painting or drawing through a process of distillation, starting with photographs and sketches, eventually arriving at a finished image. The resulting works are often completely synthetic, combining multiple vantage points, or even aspects of different locations, to achieve the desired effect.

Harbinger is part of an ongoing exploration of our general disconnect from both the wellspring of our collective folklore and the natural world. The wren in the painting is a messenger or emissary, reminding us of a larger context beyond our everyday, urban concerns.
