The subject of this portrait by William Pidgeon is his second wife, Dorothy Pidgeon (née Lees).

An earlier portrait of Dorothy wearing red, painted before the couple married, was exhibited in the 1953 Archibald.

The 1969 Archibald portrait, considered by the artist to be one of his best, was painted over an abandoned version of the 1953 Archibald portrait and remnants of that earlier image can be seen in the background.
