oil on masonite board

101.5 x 76 cm

The subject of this portrait is Cynthia Beauchamp Edwards (née Knox) (1915-2006). A friend of the artist, Newton Hedstrom, she was involved in publishing and was also known as a potter. The painting echoes the style of William Dobell’s controversial portrait of Joshua Smith, which won the Archibald Prize in 1943.
