About the Art Gallery Society

When you join the Gallery, you become a member of the Art Gallery Society of New South Wales, the most engaged group of art lovers in Australia.

Founded in 1953 to support the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Society is a not-for-profit public company and registered charity with our own governing council, staff, budget, annual report and events program. This structure enables us to raise funds to assist the Gallery with acquisitions of art, for which there is currently no government funding.

Operating as the membership arm of the Gallery, the organisation provides a range of benefits and activities to enhance your experience of art and culture.

Over the years the Society has evolved from an elite social club to a modern, broad-based organisation of people from every walk of life across New South Wales. For members, the Gallery is a home away from home, a place to return to again and again to view the ever-changing displays of art and take up some of the many learning opportunities on offer.
