NAIDOC Week 2018
Featuring Faboriginal the game show, exhibition talks and family activities
The Art Gallery of New South Wales is delighted to host of a fortnight of NAIDOC associated events for all ages including special programs at Art After Hours.
The 2018 theme, Because of her, we can! celebrates the invaluable contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made, and continue to make, to our communities, our families, our rich history and to our nation.
Headlining the Gallery’s NAIDOC offering is Faboriginal the deadly art game show, which runs over two Art After Hours evenings, Wednesday 11 and 18 July at 6.30pm. Hosted by Aboriginal writer and comedian Steven Oliver of Black Comedy fame, Oliver will be joined by two teams of courageous celebrity contestants including actors Luke Carroll, Elaine Crombie and Madeleine Madden; singer Casey Donovan; artist Adam Hill (aka Blak Douglas) and fellow comedian Andy Saunders.
The Faboriginal teams will battle it out to answer questions about Indigenous art – taking cues from the Gallery’s Aboriginal art collection. What is raark? Which mountain ranges appear most often in Albert Namatjira’s paintings? How do you make an eel trap? Expect a fun mix of trivia, celebrity, chat and laughs and come prepared to pitch in when the teams get stumped!
Also on offer at the Art Gallery of NSW is the Because of her, we can! exhibition talk series focusing on the work of artists Brenda L. Croft, Gija artists Lena Nyadbi and Rusty Peters, and senior Gumatj artists Barrupu, Gulumbu and Nyapanyapa Yunupingu.
Drawing inspiration from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander collection to celebrate NAIDOC Week, a special edition of Drop in and make the Gallery’s free art making activity for families runs Monday to Friday 9-13 and Sunday 15 July from 11am-3.30pm.
On Saturday 14 July the Gallery’s Indigenous educators will be running drop-in workshops and information sessions at NAIDOC in the City. Come along to Hyde Park to experience Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance, song, food and more.
