ARTEXPRESS returns to the Art Gallery of New South Wales this January to showcase the outstanding artworks created by NSW students for the Higher School Certificate (HSC) Visual Arts examination in 2017.

The Art Gallery of NSW is the principal venue for ARTEXPRESS 2018, which remains one of the most popular exhibitions on its annual calendar. This year, 40 artworks were selected from the 2017 cohort of 9097 Visual Arts students from the public and private schools across New South Wales.

Art Gallery of New South Wales director Michael Brand said the Gallery is delighted to present the diverse creative talents and achievements of NSW art students.

ARTEXPRESS is one of our most popular exhibitions for good reason – it is a celebration of the power of art to connect communities and engage audiences of all ages. Its popularity is testament to the public’s appetite for art created by our own talented community of young thinkers and makers.

“The final selections for this year’s ARTEXPRESS reflect the best work from the HSC Visual Arts course across both metropolitan and regional centres in NSW inspired by best practice in visual arts education,” Brand said.

The multi-disciplinary exhibition spans ceramics, collection of works, documented forms, drawing, designed objects, graphic design, painting, photomedia, printmaking, sculpture, textiles and fibre, and time-based forms.

Leeanne Carr, Art Gallery of NSW education manager and curator of ARTEXPRESS 2018 believes the exhibition embodies the spirit of this generation and offers a timely snapshot of the overlapping curiosities, passions and concerns occupying the minds of young Australians.

“I am consistently impressed by each student’s maturity and depth of thinking but also their confidence to experiment with new and innovative techniques,” Carr said.

“This year we are pleased to exhibit works from several schools that are part of ARTEXPRESS at the Art Gallery of NSW for the first time, such as Arden Anglican School, Doonside Technology High School, Lurnea High School and St Columba’s Catholic College,” she said.

For the second year, ARTEXPRESS will be presented in the Contemporary galleries on Lower level 2, home of the John Kaldor Family Collection.

ARTEXPRESS is a joint partnership between the NSW Education Standards Authority and NSW Department of Education in association with the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
