Modern art is the sound of failure, of a medium pushed to its limit

Artist’s statement

Brian Eno has said that the imperfections in music and modern art are the ‘sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart’. This inspired my body of work, where I push three mediums in different traditional fine art genres (still life, landscape, portraiture) to their ‘limits’. I made digital photography appear corrupted through pixellation. I reduced the sublime painted landscape to drips of colour. I appropriated traditional portraiture – already distorted by Francis Bacon – and further manipulated it through the torn canvas.
