Artist’s statement

Reflecting upon the image of a school classroom as a didactic space for cultivating one’s identity, Mirror, mirror examines the crucial role our environment plays in shaping, limiting and/or developing our gender identities. In two mirrored settings, the nuanced objects and figures contrast societal pressures imposed on each gender in various arenas of life, posing them as biases that stem from the environment in which we are raised. The juxtaposed colour palettes and facial expressions challenge conventional depictions of gender in art history, ultimately criticising the perpetration of such conventions and thus inviting audiences to reconsider their own interpretation/s of ‘gender’.
