Artist’s statement

Delicacy explores the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, a philosophy that finds beauty in imperfection. I extended this concept by introducing themes of mortality and decay. Raw meat is often unpleasant to look at. Meat, and our consumption of it, can be a morbid reminder of our own mortality, our own decomposition. In my body of work I encourage appreciation for the natural fidelity and innate beauty permeating the dead and decaying. The medium of the ballpoint pen reflects comfort with imperfection (pen is permanent so any mistakes are too) and also the tedious and minute natural processes that enable life.
