Artist’s statement

Antipode portrays today’s social media addiction as a facade on the individuals who mask themselves on social media to look like everyone else. Young people are perceived to have a selection of friends, but are trapped in isolation where they are creating a fantasy. By drawing on the imagery of William Shakespeare’s Midsummer night’s dream, the symbolic value of the donkey mask is to convey the obscene challenges of our modern world, using the image of an ‘Ass’ to represent the way in which young people create an altered perception of their lives. My work foretells the danger of masking yourself in the fantasy world of social media.
