My work explores the traditional 19th-century Dutch still life while integrating a more contemporary labour-intensive method of hand-drawn crosshatching. Using traditional Dutch symbols, composition and lighting as well as symbols of my own I have constructed still-life arrangements that reference aspects of my own life as well as the lives of my family and friends. My key influence was Sol LeWitt’s grid studies which created palettes using the combinations of only 45° and 180° crosshatched lines. I expanded on this by incorporating a CMYK printing process and subject matter inspired by the structure of a Dutch still life.
