Artist’s statement

History, whether public or private, has been recorded from a male perspective. My work explores this notion, and how the result has been the continual reduction of women’s contributions to stereotypes of femininity, like lace and flowers. In my investigation I examined the impact on my family throughout history as well as currently – with the marginalisation continuing despite the expanding role of women. By showing women exclusively, I attempt to confront and ‘redress’ the gender imbalance of history, promoting and valuing the role of women throughout history and for the future.
