Artist’s statement

My work explores the concept of shelter as a place of refuge and the fragility of handmade structures open to the influences of the environment. The whimsical forms that look fragile and delicate are balanced and strong, representing the precarious nature of structures and their ability to withstand the ravages of the environment. The Nepalese earthquake and the Boxing Day Tsunami 2004 demonstrated how fragile the built world is yet people were able to rebuild out of the rubble. The ceramic medium reflects the balance between fragility and strength.
