Artist’s statement

sonder: the realisation that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own – The dictionary of obscure sorrows

My work gravitates around the experiences I have inside the skateboard subculture. My pursuit of urbex (urban exploration) takes me regularly into navigations of inner city concrete, rolling in the shadows, flying through the long winding ramps, and driving to the next derelict alleyway or wall. I sampled these midnight vistas on my Canon 35mm DSLR, capturing snippets of solitude frozen in time. I began to consume these ‘sonder’ light moments, especially the ambiguous. Bill Henson’s harnessing of chiaroscuro resonated with my love for oil painting, so I too adopted subdued colour, softened edges, exaggerated plays of light and a voyeuristic collective instinct.
