How do we pass through life? What marks do we leave? How do the threads of time and our actions connect us? Through depicting moments in one life I wanted to explore these questions. My grandfather, James Waters, lives in public and personal worlds and his actions and experiences connect both. His life, like ours, has layers. The use of cotton and assorted recycled materials enhances this textural, tactile medium, establishing the metaphor for these questions. What threads do we create and what do we leave behind?

What can you infer about the relationships between the people in John Brack’s The new house and in Hannah Bailey’s Lineage? What else do these images tell us about the worlds in which these people live?
Think about the questions that Hannah Bailey poses in her artist’s statement. How do these questions relate to you? Create a series of works based on your response.
