Artist’s statement

In this series I have worked from my own black-and-white film photos taken at Cockatoo Island, Sydney, to highlight the subtle beauty of the dilapidated dockyards and buildings. Typically, we link decay with ugliness and choose to ignore imperfection, but I find the various states of erosion in these structures aesthetically pleasing, lending them a kind of haunted majesty. By using a range of media and drawing techniques, I have attempted to capture the different textures and surfaces, with a view to demonstrating that beauty found in form does not necessarily stem from geometric perfection.
