Artist’s statement

Wx12415, 5/400049: the identification numbers assigned to my grandfather throughout his service in both World War 2 and the Korean War. This work stands as a tribute to my grandfather’s inspiring efforts to overcome the traumatic memories, which so vividly intruded upon his everyday. My work attests to the human ability to cope through identification with a referential image of beauty, such as that of the orchid.

Collection connections

Saggus’s body of work explores a personal journey and memory. How are memories significant in understanding historical events? In what way has this artwork captured the essence of this particular memory? How does the work differ from a written document?

From the inside #1 2008 is part of a series of photographs by Maria Elvira Escallón that depicts the aftermath of a terrorist attack on a club in Bogotá, Colombia on 7 February 2003. What we see are traces left by people fleeing the building. View all the photographs in the series. Do you think the images convey the emotions of the people involved? How do the images affect you?
