Artist’s statement

No-one knows how many children were taken, as most records have been lost or destroyed. Many parents whose children were taken never saw them again. Siblings were taken and deliberately separated from each other. Children were torn from their native nest and thrown into a foreign materialistic world. The government’s assimilation plan saw thousands of ‘half-caste’ children trained as slaves for white families. The children were given utility blankets for their bed in the dorm. This blanket was the children’s security from the haunting white society. This is the story of My blanket.

Influencing artists: Fiona Hall, Andy Goldsworthy, Doris Salcedo
