Artist’s statement

I interpreted signs and symbols to reveal the hidden language underlying the male domain of rugby. I transformed this language, recontextualising it into a network of layers, plays, boundaries and signals to evoke ideas of urban graffiti, social commentary and phallic symbols. My abstractions push the boundaries of paint application, influenced by Jackson Pollock, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Roy de Maistre and Elisabeth Cummings. Working intuitively I used available materials, and my tools included a toilet brush. When one work accidentally became a diptych I developed the idea, using enlarged surfaces to create the sense of a narrative playing field and passing time.
