Artist’s statement

The first panel, a shaped lino block, shows my parents’ first house when they were still together. The house is shown being built, suggesting the beginning of our journey, the foundations of what was to come.

The second panel is from a photograph that reflects my childhood.

The final reduction panel depicts the house I live in now; it represents my Mum’s success and holds many dear memories for me. The yellow colour symbolises my happiness and my contentment in my current situation.

Collection connections

Domestic environments have been explored by both Grace Cossington Smith and Ashley Losapio. Discuss how each artist presents their personal worlds. How does their approach to art-making differ? What qualities could be considered similar?

Consider the clues that make these scenes domestic. How does each artist incorporate both the personal and outside worlds in the composition? Compare these works with those of other artists with a similar theme. What do they all have in common? In what way does the viewer contribute to the meaning of each work?

Create an exhibition with text panels with the theme 'personal domains’, featuring ten artists from the Gallery’s collection, including Cossington Smith. Write an accompanying catalogue essay outlining the reasons for your selection.
