Artist’s statement

Entities of the heart portrays a hidden layer of the mind, where a white, soundless voyage takes place, in which occurs a hollow absorption of conflict, curiosity, confusion and joy. The euphoric white spaces and soft colours aim to create transparency and tranquility, reminiscent of a childhood where a great story of imagination must have taken place. Each character is a gateway to a different story, but they are all connected in one memory, and in themselves become a pattern to my existence.

Collection connections

Outline your reading of Ritchie Priyana’s work and the narrative apparent to you. Do any images echo memories of events and emotions from your past? Create a list of the different characters Priyana has created and their significant features or qualities. Write a brief biography for each of them. Suggest what each character may symbolise and why.

Evaluate the overall composition of Priyana’s artwork and how each panel contributes to the whole. Consider how the title unifies these panels conceptually.

Analyse the interplay between text and image in Priyana’s work. Compare his work to Ian Abdulla’s. Analyse how Abdulla’s choice of a naïve painting technique amplifies his subject matter. Is Priyana employing the same strategy? Assess why Priyana and Abdulla have chosen to incorporate text into their images. Would the meaning differ without the text?
