Artist’s statement

My work is an exploration of how we find beauty in what we know. Our perceptions of the attractive are seemingly limited to the familiar. This is demonstrated in the extreme in an era not so long ago where our population was divided into Europeans and ‘savages’. An era depicting a racial bias so blatant it is almost comical, a view in which things, however beautiful are reduced to the merit of a carnival sideshow. A lack of knowledge, a fear of the unknown has lead us to condense a complex culture to something so simple and subhuman.

Graphite was the medium I felt I could effectively manipulate to create the haunting images and depict a world in which all that does not fit the traditional conventions of beauty is almost dehumanised. My work is about finding beauty in what we don’t understand.
