Artist’s statement

Video games, particularly of the survival horror genre, have been my inspiration. I played with elements of the genre – zombies, puzzle solving and sound – to produce a linear version of the gaming experience. The horror, however, has been subverted by deceptively bright colours (drawn from the Japanese game Killer7), smooth, untextured surfaces and the rabbit-eared zombies à la Frank from Donnie Darko.

Killer7, a game with horrifying subject matter, can be played with disarming ease due to its surreal, stylised graphics. Perhaps the protagonist’s clean, altered and selective perception of reality, enabling it to be 'played’, is the horrifying aspect.
