Artist’s statement

Within a small compound in inner-city Manila, the female inmates collect the city waste that surround the area. Through an arduous process they break down these materials into thin strips to weave together and create various objects.

The form of a flower was given to me during one of my visits. For me this represented the fragility of the women, the result of survival in a harsh environment and the positivity these women shared in their bleak situations and uncertain futures.

On my return to Australia, I began a mailing group to connect with these women. We shared our stories and they shared theirs.
