Artist’s statement

The idea behind my body of work is the stress of the HSC, the pressure placed on Year 12 students, and the workload expected of them – you have to be a superhero to deal with it!

The pop art/cartoon style allowed me to use words as well as pictures to develop the concept into a narrative, becoming a gentle spoof on postmodernism and the HSC Visual Arts course. The punchline in the last panel represents every Visual Arts student’s worst nightmare – the realisation that they have no concept, no work… and no time. This is when many art teachers suggest appropriating Brett Whiteley, casting body parts in plaster bandages, or covering the work in chicken wire…
