The Art Gallery of NSW has made an enduring contribution to Australian culture for almost 150 years. While Macquarie’s support spans a fraction of that time, we have seen how the Gallery continually evolves its offering to reflect the changing arts landscape and better engage the public.
Having been involved with the Gallery in a number of initiatives since 2005, we jumped at the opportunity to support the Australian art collection and the breadth and depth of artistic talent it showcases.
We have learned much from the Gallery’s example and leadership in the development of our own collection. Established in 1987 around the theme of the Australian land and its psyche, with a focus on supporting the nation’s emerging artists, the Macquarie Group Collection now features 740 works in Macquarie’s offices around the world.
Many of the Macquarie Group Collection’s emerging artists have since reached more celebrated status. Some are featured in the Art Gallery of NSW. More may join those ranks with time. We certainly hope so.
Helen Burton, Macquarie Group Collection director, and Maud Page, Art Gallery of NSW deputy director and director of collections, discuss the evolution of Australian art and the modern-day gallery experience.
