Leading Australian and international artists explore the intricacies of human relationships

Taking its title from a 2016 painting by New Zealand artist Kushana Bush, this exhibition explores the intensity, intricacy, pathos and power of human relationships through remarkable new acquisitions for the Art Gallery of NSW collection by some of the most compelling women artists at work today – from Australia’s Tracey Moffatt, Judith Wright and Justene Williams to internationally renowned figures Jenny Saville, Dana Schutz, Tracey Emin, Njideka Akunyili Crosby and Kimsooja.

At once open and assertive, the phrase ‘here we are’ can be read as a declaration of artistic purpose, acknowledging the way each artist uses their chosen medium to stake out a place for herself in the world. But Here we are is also an exhibition about connections, relationships, differences and commonalities – the many and complex forms that ‘we’ can take.
