About
This delicate, airy watercolour is from the 'Saplings Series' of 1962-68, in which Williams' vision of the landscape became increasingly abstract. The harmoniously blotted gouache and watercolour washes suggest an ambiguity in the relationship between the trees and their background, while the delicate tones and dappled application of colour evokes the play of sunlight in the forest.
