In the 1950s Rauschenberg’s work took a very different direction to the abstract expressionism dominant in the United States at the time. Rauschenberg’s dada sensibility – inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s engagement with everyday life – showed him to have more in common with emerging movements in Europe. ‘Dylaby’ is typical of this sensibility. In 1962 Rauschenberg was the only American artist included in ‘Dylaby: dynamic labyrinth’, an experimental exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam based on artistic collaboration and installation works. The arrows pointing in opposite directions in ‘Dylaby’ may be Rauschenberg’s tongue-in-cheek response to the chaotic show involving such radical artists.
