    J. F. Archibald was appointed a trustee of the National Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1915 and remained on the board until his death on 10 September 1919. Archibald left one tenth of his estate in trust for a non-acquisitive annual portrait prize to be awarded by the trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, known as the Archibald prize.
