  • About

Henry Gibbons (1884-1972) joined the staff of the Sydney Art School in 1922, working closely with Julian Ashton, the founder of the school. Gibbons suggested a Saturday afternoon drawing class and when this was commenced in February 1924 the first intake of students included William Dobell, Douglas Dundas, John Passmore, Herbert Badham, George Feather Lawrence and John Brackenreg. When Ashton died in 1942, Gibbons took over the running of the school, also memorialising its founder by adding the name of Julian Ashton to its title. Gibbons retired in 1960.
