About
Spence was a fellow artist and friend of Roberts whom he had known from their time together in 1892 at the artists' colony 'Curlew Camp', in Little Sirius Cove on Sydney Harbour's north shore. Aged 28 at the time of this portrait, he was a frequent illustrator for Cosmos, a general interest magazine of the period.
