About
Edith Cusack was born in New Zealand but moved with her family to NSW, aged three. In Sydney she was taught by Joseph Arthur Bennett (1853-1929) and was his assistant. In Paris in the early 1890s she studied under William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) and attended the Académie Julian. She returned to Sydney in 1894 and shared studios with her sister Aline (c1867-1949), the subject of this pastel, taught art and exhibited regularly with the Royal Art Society of New South Wales.
The Gallery also has an oil by Edith Cusack of her sister, painted in 1896.
