  • About

Wailer's subject was taken from English poet William Morris' 'Sigurd the Volsung' (1876), his translation of the epic Icelandic narrative poem 'Volsunga saga' (from which Wagner's opera 'The ring' also originates). The only wood engraving made by the artist, it is remarkable for its monumental quality and for Wailer's mastery of this demanding technique with his left hand, due to loss of his right arm during World War I.
