About
Kaapa Mbitjana Tjampitjinpa is perhaps the most instrumental artist of the early Papunya Tula movement. Tjampitjinpa was the principle painter of the Papunya School murals and was the first chairman of the Papunya Tula Artist Cooperative in 1972. However, prior to the establishment of this co-operative he was selling his works independently at Papunya. His earliest works were carved from wood and he later painted watercolours in the Hermannsburg vein. Given Tjampitjinpa had been resident at Papunya since 1957 and Namatjira lived there for several months in 1959, it is not surprising that their paths crossed, particularly given their cultural connections.
Tjampitjinpa often worked closely with Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri and Tim Leura Tjapaltjarri and stylistic similarities can be seen across many of their works and are evident in Untitled, circa 1974.
