  • About

Hector Gilliland studied at East Sydney Technical College in the 1930s. His work became increasingly abstract from the late 1950s after he returned from a period in Europe and the UK, where he responded particularly to the work of Ben Nicholson, Victor Pasmore and Alan Davie – he was a founding member of the Sydney Nine (1961) for example.

These drawings were made by the artist while he was a student at East Sydney Tech - as a student of night classes between 1935-39 and in 1940 when he sat in on life drawing classes.

The model for the male nude s is Wolfgang Cardamatis, an artist, cartoonist and designer who modelled in Sydney and Melbourne for a number of artists including James Gleeson, David Strachan, George Bell and Russell Drysdale.
