About
The lithograph is one of a series of 12 plates completed by Géricault when he was in London in 1820-21. His English prints portray a range of genre subjects from beggars, the urban poor and the work of farriers to depictions of draught horses and thoroughbreds. The softness of the lithographic crayon is brilliantly manipulated to capture the steamy atmosphere inside the smithy.
