  • About

This photograph of Frida Kahlo was taken by Manuel Alvarez Bravo at the Picasso exhibition, sponsored and organised by MoMa, at the Muse de Arte Moderno, Mexico City 1944.

Due to the perceived lack of government funding for international modern art exhibitions in Mexico during the 1940s, North American museums sponsored and organised exhibitions in Mexico City through the non-governmental Mexican organisation ‘Society of Modern Art’. The 1944 Picasso show was the first exhibition of his work in Mexico. The following year in 1945, through the collaboration between the Society of Modern Art and various North American museums and promoters, an exhibition was held at the same venue of Manuel Alvarez Bravo’s work.
