  • About

The classic restraint of Nanteuil’s portrait engravings is based on highly finished chalk drawings which he made from life, later translating them into a matrix of clearly defined lines and flecks with the burin. Nanteuil’s sitters are always presented bust view and looking at the viewer, their faces framed by an unadorned oval and set against meticulously ruled backgrounds. Nanteuil was appointed portrait engraver to Louis XIV in 1659, amply documenting the king and his court, as well as many prominent Parisians.
