About
Tom Carment came to prominence as a painter of Sydney's harbour life and industrial areas in the mid-1970s. For his first solo exhibition in July- August 1976, Carment converted a warehouse next door to his studio in East Balmain into a gallery space. At the time, he explained: 'These pictures were created in a workmanlike environment, and I want to show them in this area, from which they are derived' [1]. One such picture was 'Balmain'; in it, Carment has depicted the old White Bay Power Station peering over a wonky road lined with worker's cottages and telegraph poles with dangly power lines. Also included in Carment’s warehouse exhibition was his painting 'Night road', which was acquired by the AGNSW earlier that year and lent back to the artist for his debut show.
