The phrase composed of six characters "tao chan zhu shi zhi jian" was often used by seal carvers of the Ming and Qing dynasties to express the lofty sentiment. It is said that Qing dynasty's literati artist Deng Shiru, 邓石如(1743—1805), once put a seal stone on the fire before caving it. When it is taken out of the fire, the cracks on the stone reminded him the scene of Su Dongpo boating on the river at Chibi (Red Cliff), therefore he carved a sentence from Su Dongpo's famous Ode on the Red Cliff.

Rangzhi is likely refered to Wu Rangzhi (1799-1870), famous seal caver and calligrapher of Qing dynasty, native of Yizheng of Jiangsu province.
