About
Arlo Mountord is a Melbourne based video artist who works primarily with digital animation. In 'The lament', Mountford reanimates the lovers and cherubs depicted in Watteau's rococo paintings 'Pilgrimage to the Isle of Cythera' 1717 and 'Pilgrimage to Cythera' 1718-19. The narratives in these works have intrigued art historians for centuries because it is not clear whether the subjects were arriving or leaving the amorous island of Cythera. In 'The lament' Mountford has extended the narratives of Watteau's 'The pilgrimage' long enough for each scene to play out with surprising and amusing outcomes.
