  • About

J.G. S. Lucas is a minor artist who worked in a Martinesque style, creating his own derivative compositions. He appears to have been particularly inspired by Martin’s panoramas illustrating the spectacular convulsions of nature, as seen in this portrayal of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The dramatic sky was vigorously scratched in with a drypoint needle after the engraver had completed the carefully detailed architecture.
