About
Yayoi Kusama’s expressive sculptures, paintings and performances are instantly recognisable for their striking colours and application of polka dots. Flowers have been a lifelong passion for Kusama. Her family owned a seed nursery, and she grew up surrounded by plants in greenhouses, closely observing the cycles of new life and ultimate death. Her ubiquitous polka dots are connected to vivid early memories, such as an expanse of river pebbles glinting in the sun. She also recalls hallucinations experienced in childhood, in which she saw flashes of light and flowers spreading across surfaces and onto the walls around her.
'Flowers that Bloom in the Cosmos' was created especially for the enjoyment of visitors to the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
About this sculpture, Kusama wrote:
The days I shed tears admiring the cosmos
In the cosmos I discovered flowers blooming
The happiness and joy
Of finding bouquets in the heavensI want to share this passion with you
Let us rejoice together
Shouting out thanks to my flowers forever
From Earth with all my heart
