This intricate box for an inkstone is adorned with imagery that leads from summer into autumn and the arrival of winter. Summer is indicated by the red and gold squares, overlaid with dazzling dragonflies which were each created using a different lacquer technique. The interior is decorated with autumn grasses and a heart-shaped inkstone indicating the autumn moon. The box was made by Unryūan, one of Japan’s most celebrated contemporary lacquer artists.
