About
Plate 278 from the 'Célébrités de La Caricature' ('Celebrities from La Caricature') series, published in 'La Caricature', no 134, 30 May 1833.
Jean-Pons-Guillaume Viennet (1777–1868) was a politician, playwright and poet. His literary style opposed the romantic writings of Victor Hugo. Daumier plays on the fact that ‘Viennet’ sounds like ‘vieux niais’, meaning ‘old fool’.
