About
This image is from the series 'The flowers of Edo with pictures of noted views', an album of 34 striking images by six print designers, mostly dating from the early 1860s.
The triptych depicts a young samurai with a party of young women making a pleasure cruise on the Sumida River. Although the title of the image does not directly reference the Tale, cherry blossom viewing was an elegant custom that began among courtiers of Lady Murasaki’s time and the 'ebi chasen' (‘prawn-tail’) hairstyle worn by the young man is a defining characteristic of Edo-period depictions of Genji.
