Works in the collection
Earle Backen distinguished himself as a printmaker and teacher of printmaking in Sydney in the 1960s and 70s after spending a number of years in London and more significantly, Paris, in the 1950s as a NSW Traveling Scholarship holder.
In the 1980s he put printmaking aside and devoted himself wholly to painting, producing some of the finest classically inspired modern still life compositions by any Australian artist.
Backen excelled as a watercolourist; his mastery over the medium revealed not only great freedom of execution over transparent washes of watercolour, but also control over brilliantly saturated light-filled colour and fine draughtsmanship.
