    Born in Perth, Western Australia, Hal Missingham studied under James WR Linton in Perth and later in London under Bernard Meninsky at the Central School. He returned to Australia in 1941. After the war, he was a foundation member of SORA (Studio of Realist Art) in Sydney before succeeding Will Ashton as Director of the AGNSW in 1945.
