Geometric variation VII, from the suite Geometric variations

Andrew Christofides ‘Geometric variations’ is a suite of seven colour screenprints executed in 1991 from drawings made in 1990. The latter were inspired by statements on Concrete Art made by Theo van Doesburg (1883–1931) in 1930 – which emphasised the purely plastic formal elements of art, allied with a mechanical technique. For van Doesburg, Dutch founder of De Stijl, art was to be the product of the rational conscious mind, inspired by scientific concepts or mathematical formulae. He is credited with taking the flat geometric painting of the De Stijl group into the third dimension.

Christofides screenprints were part of a larger project that ran from the late 1980s to 1993, in which he had explored the relevance of the notion of the concrete within his own work.
